workshop 1 options
The Heart of Repentance in Joel
Repentance (discovering our sin, and turning from it, towards God) is a foundational and ongoing practice in our lives with Jesus. In this workshop, we will explore how the prophet Joel and the Psalmist describe repentance and discuss how to cultivate a heart of repentance in our lives today.
Tracing Biblical Themes in Joel
The Bible has many themes that run all the way from Genesis to Revelation. In this workshop, we will learn how to identify several of the Bible’s major themes in the book of Joel, and then expand our view and track them across the whole story of Scripture.
Seeing the Attributes of God in Joel
In this workshop, we’ll learn how to locate God and his attributes in the text of the Bible, using the book of Joel as our guide. We will spend our time looking specifically for the attributes of God that appear in Joel’s writings, and then discuss how this practice helps to expand our view of the character of God.
Bible Study Tools: Word Study and Cross References
If you’re new to an inductive method of studying the Bible, this workshop is for you! We know that reading and understanding the Bible can be overwhelming, so it’s our mission to equip you with tools you can use at home. We will spend our time practicing two helpful Bible study tools, word study and cross referencing, using the book of Joel as our practice text.
Workshop Two Options
Understanding Imagery in Joel
The Bible is full of unfamiliar and difficult imagery for modern readers like us to understand. In this workshop, we will take a deeper look into the Biblical imagery found in Joel and discuss how these ancient images can hold meaning for us today.
Return to the Lord: Prayer Modeled in Joel
In this workshop, we’ll discuss the Biblical practices of prayer and fasting. Using Joel’s model and other models in Scripture, we will talk about what it looks like practically to grow in the disciplines of prayer and fasting. We will also spend a portion of the workshop time praying together in small groups.
Real Hope: How Joel and Jesus Meet Us in Our Suffering
Jesus makes it clear in His Word that those who choose to follow Him will endure suffering in this life. We regularly struggle with pain, chronic illness, unanswered prayers, tragedy and death. Where do we put our hope in times like these? This workshop will explore the theme of the coming Day of the Lord and how God plans to end our suffering forever.
Bible Study Tools: Outlining and Commentary
If you’ve been to a DWITW study or are familiar with the Bible study tools we use, here’s a great opportunity to practice some of the more challenging tools in a group setting. We will spend our time practicing additional Bible study tools, outlining and paraphrasing. Using the book of Joel as our source, we will share our findings in small groups. A brief discussion on the study tool of commentary with some helpful resources will be included.
